There's no need for an address bar or tabs when using the apps, so more space is available for the content. The apps are actually about the same experience, with the display size being one of the most noticeable differences. The Quest VR headset includes a web browser, and it's possible to log into Facebook and Instagram via the browser. Being able to use both hands is surprisingly effective and didn't feel overly slow or awkward as it does when entering text with a game controller. However, rather than multi-touch, it's point and click. The keyboard is a virtual one that appears below the screen that's active, and typing can be done with both hands. This covers a wide enough area that it requires turning or stepping back to see all three. If multitasking is enabled in settings, it's possible to open up to three screens of this size side by side. ![]() The experience is better with a Quest 2 since it has a higher resolution, but the original quest is not bad quality. The user sees what appears to be about a 30 to 40-inch monitor with no bezels floating at a comfortable distance. The benefit of using social media in VR is the size of the virtual screens. The only issue with using the Quest for social media browsing is long-term comfort and battery life, both of which should improve in future VR headsets. For now, these apps, which are currently available for Quest owners to download, are labeled as beta versions, meaning things might change soon. In the future, the apps might evolve into something more like Meta's Horizon Worlds, which is a 3D social world that represents a tiny taste of what the Metaverse might become. While VR is typically a three-dimensional experience, Instagram and Facebook are 2D apps, meaning they appear as screens in VR, much like they do in a web browser. Meta is the new company name for Facebook, the company that also owns both Oculus and Instagram, so it makes sense that these social media apps would be among the first to arrive for the Quest VR headset. While Oculus wasn't the first company to make a head-mounted display for VR use, it is among the most well-known and most active. Meta wants to make VR and AR (augmented reality) part of everyday life, which means social media apps need to be added to the platform, and the beta versions work surprisingly well. ![]() There are some powerful drawing and 3D modeling apps available for the Quest and other VR headsets. Virtual reality has been primarily used for gaming for the general public. Instagram and Facebook are available as beta apps for Meta's Quest VR headset, but the appearance might be a bit unexpected.
